Sunrise Sessions: Volleyball, Community, and Purpose – A Journey in the Philippines

When passion meets purpose, incredible things happen. This is exactly what unfolded in the stunning rural landscapes of the Philippines, where Let’s Keep The Ball Flying (LKTBF) recorded the first-ever Sunrise Session. A podcast-style conversation at dawn, capturing the true essence of our global volleyball movement.

In this episode, Lesley de Jonge, founder of LKTBF, sits down with two inspiring volleyball figures: Kimberly Drewniok, a former national team player and LKTBF ambassador, and Malina Terrell, one of LKTBF’s longest-serving ambassadors. Together, they share their experiences in using volleyball to empower communities and why they believe in the Guru movement.

The Power of 1%: Small Actions, Big Impact

Kimberly opens up about her transition from professional volleyball to community-driven impact. Having played for her national team for nine years, she always sought ways to give back, from jersey auctions to grassroots projects in Africa. But joining the 1% Movement changed everything.

“I knew that 1% of my salary wouldn’t make a big difference in my life, but it could change the lives of so many kids,” Kimberly shares. Now, standing in the Philippines and witnessing the impact first-hand, she calls it "the most precious gift."

A Lifelong Commitment to Giving Back

For Malina, the journey started even before she joined LKTBF. Long before her first trip to Tanzania with the organisation, she was collecting and sending gear to volleyball communities in need. From Finland to Greece to Bali, she has remained deeply committed to this mission.

“There’s always something happening in life. But when you find your tribe and do something as powerful as this, it grounds you,” Malina reflects. She describes the friendships built through LKTBF as soul connections—an unbreakable bond between those who believe in using volleyball as a force for good.

A Call to Join the Guru Community
